What is Temporo Mandibular Disorder?

Temporo Mandibular Disorder (TMD) refers to a group of conditions that affect the Temporo Mandibular Joint (TMJ), the muscles of mastication, and the surrounding tissues. The TMJ is a complex joint that connects the mandible (lower jawbone) to the temporal bone of the skull, enabling movements such as opening, closing, and sliding of the jaw.

The Causes of Temporo Mandibular Disorder

The causes of TMD can be multifactorial and may include

Trauma

Injury to the jaw, TMJ, or surrounding muscles can lead to TMD.

Misalignment

Malocclusion or poor bite can put strain on the TMJ and surrounding muscles.

Bruxism

Grinding or clenching of teeth put continuous strain that can lead to TMD.

Extraction

Extractions and non-replacement of teeth hinder the lower jaw movement and leads to TMD

Stress and anxiety

Tension in the jaw and facial muscles can contribute to TMD.

Habits

Frequent gum chewing, nail biting, or other habits can contribute to TMD.
